Budapest Nightlife Information

Szimpla Kert in BudapestTo describe Budapest’s nightlife as merely ‘diverse’ would be an unworthy understatement. Crazy would be a better would, and unlike most cities, the centre isn’t even where the real action is. Cheap dive bars, funky, student-filled ruin pubs and classy cocktail lounges fan out through the city, sitting down cute little side streets waiting to be discovered.

Budapest’s night life boasts a number of large, glitzy clubs, many on the outskirts of town, which are a haven for fashion-conscious househeads and high-rollers – and often attract big-name DJs from around the world. A38, Hello Baby, Ötkert, Akvarium & Corvinteto – these places are all built for people watching. The area around St. Stephens Basilica is also worth checking out with plenty of gorgeous cocktail and wine bars.

Erzsebet ter in BudapestBut of course the real gems in Budapest’s nightlife crown are the ruin pubs. A unique concept, now famous the world over sees old abandoned courtyard residential blocks turned into urban architecture bars decorated with furniture pulled right out of your local jumble sale and approved of by your grandma. Szimpla started the hype and now hundreds fill the streets of the Jewish district and surrounding. Some are big, some are small, some attract tourists, some just the locals. But in all of them you can expect a good time, plenty of alcohol and lots of chances to take photos of the weird and wonderful things on display.

Here are some of our favourite bars and clubs in Budapest

Szimpla – The ruin pub that started it all. Plenty of rooms to get lost in, art decorating every wall and dirt cheap beer which should make dealing with the hoards of tourists that little bit easier.

Ankert – Another ruin pub with a more sparse industrial feel. It has a huge outdoor courtyard which is great for summer and the inside space hosts some great music events. Oh and the food on offer isn’t bad either.

Ötkert – One of the most popular clubs in Budapest where you can listen to commercial music and R’n’b. During the day it’s a restaurant that turns into a club by night.

Peaches and Cream – located on the ‘Broadway’ street of Budapest, this is a top R’n’B club. Queue lengths vary, but it’s usually easy to get in. Great dance club. Drinks are relatively cheap.

Doboz – A ruin pub by day, turns into a courtyard dance club by night. Great music: Popular commercial songs and R’n’B in the other room.

Akvarium – Newly opened for 2014 just next to Deak Square and sunken into the ground. In fact the whole of Erzsebet Square on which it sits, turns into one big drunken picnic come summertime with a few different park side bars keeping you from getting thirsty (or sober).

DiVino – This is the place to sip wine if you like cultural surroundings. Choose from over 100 wines and enjoy a range of snacks to accompany.
